چکیده

We consider small world graphs as defined by Kleinberg (2000), i.e., graphs obtained from a ddimensional mesh by adding links chosen at random according to the d-harmonic distribution. In these graphs, greedy routing performs in O(log2 n) expected number of steps. We introduce indirect-greedy routing. We show that giving O(log2 n) bits of topological awareness per node enables indirect-greedy routing to perform in O(log1+1/d n) expected number of steps in d-dimensional augmented meshes. We also show that, independently of the amount of topological awareness given to the nodes, indirectgreedy routing performs in (log1+1/d n) expected number of steps. In particular, augmenting the topological awareness above this optimum of O(log2 n) bits would drastically decrease the performance of indirect-greedy routing. Our model demonstrates that the efficiency of indirectgreedy routing is sensitive to the “world’s dimension,” in the sense that high dimensional worlds enjoy faster greedy routing than low dimensional ones. This could not be observed in Kleinberg’s routing. In addition to bringing new light to Milgram’s experiment, our protocol presents several desirable properties. In particular, it is totally oblivious, i.e., there is no header modification along the path from the source to the target, and the routing decision depends only on the target, and on information stored locally at each node. Inductive Learning in Small and Large Worlds

Bayesian treatments of inductive inference and decision making presuppose that the structure of the situation under consideration is fully known. We are, however, often faced with having only very fragmentary information about an epistemic situation. This tension was discussed in decision theory by Savage (1954) in terms of ‘small worlds’ and ‘large worlds’ (‘grand worlds’ in Savage’s terminolo...

Simultaneous Ascending Bid Auctions

We analyze simultaneous ascending bid auctions with multiple objects in which bidders can be budget constrained. The presence of budget constraints shrinks the equilibrium set. A family of equilibria with a high degree of competition, as well as a family of equilibria with a high degree of collusion, disappear. When the budget available to each bidder is private information then even a very sma...

Axiomatic Theory of Equilibrium Selection in Signaling Games with Generic Payoffs

Three axioms from decision theory select sets of Nash equilibria of signaling games in extensive form with generic payoffs. The axioms require undominated strategies (admissibility), inclusion of a sequential equilibrium (backward induction), and dependence only on the game’s normal form even when embedded in a larger game with redundant strategies or irrelevant players (small worlds). The axio...

Construction of Small Worlds in the Physical Topology of Wireless Networks

The concept of small worlds is introduced into the physical topology of wireless networks in this work. A. Helmy provided two construction schemes of small worlds for the wireless networks, link rewiring and link addition, but he mainly focused on the virtual topology. Based on the broadcasting nature of the radio transmission, we propose a construction scheme of small worlds for the physical t...

Load Balancing, Latency Management and Separation of Concerns in a Distributed Virtual World

1 Why Distributed Virtual Worlds? Although many research groups are currently designing and building virtual worlds based upon the functionality of a single hardware platform or a small number of tightly connected platforms, the need for distributing virtual worlds has been well demonstrated in domains such as ight simulators (Lee, Rissman, D'Ippolito, Plinta and Van Scoy 1988) and distributed ...
